The Culture of Health

We’re feeling a little nostalgic. It’s been nearly 10 years since we started cold pressing juices for you wonderful people, and over the past decade we have been reflecting on what it means to foster a ‘culture of health’.

You may have noticed we use this phrase a lot, and wondered what it meant. Our culture of health isn’t about chasing the superficial, unachievable bod for the gram; it’s about nurturing the key pillars of health. Those that go beyond the physical – such as mental, emotional, financial, environmental and social well-being.

Sometimes chasing optimal health can feel overwhelming, so instead of trying to do it all we believe in finding a sustainable equilibirium. Below, we’ve shared 5 key principles we think can help to find your own, personal culture of health.

01 – Work Life BalanceDon’t forget to smell those roses

Balancing work and personal life is challenging. With the increasing cost of living there is constant pressure to achieve financial security. But this can come at a price. How can we avoid becoming workaholics that shut out our family and friends? Our founder Scott has some tips on how to get organised to reclaim your time for the more important things.

For instance, starting to get out of bed earlier to move the body, get ahead of everything that is going to happen that day and most importantly have a slice of personal time before the world starts needing you. That’s why our suburban stores open at 6 am – we’re here for the early birds, for those who like to fuel their body after their morning workout or the ones who enjoy a freshly brewed coffee with their friends before work.

02 – Nurture Your MindGood mental health = wealth

Cultivating mental wellbeing is at the top of the priority list for optimal health. In an ideal world, we would all be as chilled as a cucumber* every single day, no matter what life throws at us. But we know that’s not realistic, so we’ve put together some tips to help. *Speaking of chilled cucumbers, have you tried our cold pressed green Cali juice? It’s really good.

We find that working on the physical health pillar will have beneficial effect on the mental health. But when physical activity is not possible, try to shift your focus and go back to the basics such as deep breathing and a good night’s sleep to support your mind. Most of us at Cali HQ find we are pretty rubbish at meditation; however, we recently tried a breathing workshop, and it did actually help us achieve a sense of calm and focus we hadn’t experienced before. If you’re a night owl and your mind keeps racing, try the 4-7-8 breathing techniques. The counting might be annoying at times, but then out of the sudden it calms the mind and you’re fast asleep. At Cali we also offer a range of no or slow release caffeine alternatives. (hello matcha!) as cutting back the caffeine can have a beautiful impact on your slumber.

03 – Feel All the Feels Embrace your emotions, good and bad

Emotions are an integral part of the human experience and finding balance means embracing them all (even the ones we don’t like). Allow yourself to feel the joy, sadness, anger, and fear. They are all valid, and there’s no need to judge or suppress them. But what if they get too much? Adopting a mindfulness practice, eating well and prioritising healthy relationships can help to establish emotional balance that is beneficial and sustainable.

Emotional intelligence enables us to navigate relationships effectively and fosters a healthier, more empathetic community. However, it’s important to not do this all alone. Surround yourself with people who support your emotional well-being. Healthy relationships provide a safe space to express your feelings and receive understanding and empathy from others. Also, your diet can play a big role. Eating quality food attests to this, as the gut can play a huge part in dictating how your emotions play out. This is where Cali can help as we offer real food, quickly, so you can seek out quality wholefoods more often.

Cultivating mental wellbeing is at the top of the priority list for optimal health. In an ideal world, we would all be as chilled as a cucumber.

04 – Nurture the Physical Health – Its your greatest asset

The best exercise routine is the one you enjoy and can sustain. We are firm believers in integrating movement into your social life, making it a part of both your physical and social well-being. Consider joining a friendly gym that has a great community, catching up with friends over a jog or a casual game of table tennis.

05 – Relationships Are Key – Supportive networks for the win

Healthy relationships are the cornerstone of optimal wellbeing. Surrounding yourself with empathetic people who support your health goals will set up a safe space for you to express your feelings. But sometimes this isn’t easy to do, so reaching out for professional help can be a beneficial step on your wellness journey. It’s important being able to share experiences within a safe space and seek guidance when needed.

When you’re simply in need of listening to some good tunes, and watching the people go by, head down to your local and get a good ol fix of wholesome goodness.

06 – Care for the Environment – There’s no Plan(et) B

Taking care of our planet, and embracing nature is essential for our collective physical and emotional wellbeing. We can all do our part by using reusable products, recycling materials like paper, plastic and glass, and composting organic waste.

Even simple tweaks like buying and trading second hand items, bringing a keep cup or reusable bottle, or reducing meat intake by one meal a week can make a big difference.
Let’s build a stronger connection with the planet by making better choices every day. Keep subscribing to stay informed about the steps we take at Cali Press to be more responsible for the environment, such as supporting locally grown foods and choosing organic where we can.
